Allergenic Mold

Allergenic mold causes allergy-like symptoms. The most common types of allergenic molds include alternaria, aspergillus, and cladosporium. Alternaria molds are a group of about 300 different mold species found in textured parts of the home like carpets and fabric. Aspergillus mold is a type of fungus that causes respiratory issues. Cladosporium contains about 40 species of fungus. It can penetrate pipes and other leaky areas and is commonly found both indoors and outdoors.

Pathogenic Mold

Pathogenic mold causes infections in people with compromised immune systems. Certain pre-existing conditions can make you more susceptible to mold-related illnesses. However, pathogenic mold can also target people with healthy immune systems depending on factors like health history, age, and length of exposure. Because airborne mold spores can be inhaled, most pathogenic molds target the respiratory system. Symptoms may be mistaken for asthma, pulmonary infections, and even fungal meningitis.

Toxigenic Mold

The toxic byproducts released by toxic mold can cause severe health issues. These mycotoxins are different from mold spores and are easily transferred through contact as well as inhalation. Not all toxigenic mold types release dangerous toxins, but you would need lab testing in order to be sure. Stachybotrys chartarum, or black mold, has the worst reputation of all toxic mold. However, according to the CDC, it is just as dangerous as any other type of toxic mold.
