Mold vs Mildew: Is There a Difference?

How can you tell if it’s mold or mildew when you’re looking at spots in your bathroom or basement? Is there a difference between mold vs. mildew? Although they have many similarities, they also have quite a few differences—especially in the removal process—that are important for you to know.

Mold vs. Mildew: Similarities

Mildew and mold aren’t just similar—what homeowners call mildew is actually mold in its early stages. The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) warns that mildew can start growing in as little as 24 hours, so it’s important to get rid of it as soon as possible before it matures and releases harmful spores.

  • Both mold and mildew grow in areas with high moisture, such as bathrooms, basements, windows, and kitchens.
  • Mildew and mold can both appear as visible spots on a wall, ceiling, cabinet, towel, or any other surface in a room.
  • Although it’s not as dangerous as black mold, mildew can still affect your health. Extended exposure to mildew can cause the same type of allergic reaction as mold, including nasal congestion, eye irritation, coughing, and headaches.

Mold vs. Mildew: Differences

Appearance

When it’s visible, mildew is usually white or gray. It does not take on very dark colors and generally has a dry, flat, powdery texture. Mold can appear as any of a rainbow of colors, and usually looks more textured and “fuzzy.” Mildew sticks to the surfaces of walls, ceilings, and other objects, so you’ll usually be able to see it. Mold, on the other hand, is not always visible, as it likes to burrow into cracks and crevices, which makes it more dangerous.

Smell

Mold and mildew both have an unpleasant smell. However, mold has a much more pungent odor than mildew. Mildew causes the room it’s in to smell musty, sort of like a damp towel that’s left out and never thoroughly dries. Mold, on the other hand, is a more powerful fungus and because of that will generally have a stronger odor.

Removal

In general, you can remove mildew by scrubbing with an everyday household cleaner like a bleach solution. Once you clean it off, it should not reappear. Mold, on the other hand, requires professional removal by a qualified mold remediator.
